Choppin It Up: Joey Mack

Posted by

Double Cin Magazine: First off, introduce yourself to everyone who hasn’t heard of you…
Joey Mack: For those that don’t know me, my name is Joey Mack, born and raised in Cincinnati Ohio, 22 years old. Ever since [I was] 16, writing has always been a passion of mine, i would take time on days where i had nothing to do and just write. Over time i realized i had a real talent, and wanted to pursue it. So in 2010, I decided to step in the booth and get my thoughts recorded. And ever since then i have just been working on perfecting the craft and growing as a musician.

Tell me about your very first track you recorded. How did you feel about it back then, and how do you feel about it now?
The very first track i laid in the booth was a song called “Don’t Matter.” Right after i dropped it in the booth, i felt like this was what i wanted for the rest of my life. I wanted to express myself through music, and touch other people who feel the same way. And looking back at the track now, i feel like I’ve just progressed so much since then, its not a bad song by any means but i can tell i have personally grown into a more diverse artist.

Don’t Matter

Also when i first heard myself, for the first time it already felt like i made it. Like i just know whenever i touch the pen and step in the booth that its right. that little chill you get up your spine that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up, that is how it every single time for me.

You’ve been apart in a lot big shows, including Selfdiploma.com’s Summer Slam Concert Series and the Machine Gun Kelly show at the Madison. What was your most memorable experience at a show?
Yeah its been a blessing to be involved in shows with big crowds like that, there was over 800 people at Fountain Square when i performed, and then for Machine Gun Kelly there was 1200+ . But at MGK, i felt i had a real defining moment, because 6 months ago i was performing at Dirty Jacks in front of 50 people at the most. But the most memorable experience was hearing the crowd at Machine Gun Kelly chant my name. It really kinda threw me back. Cause all you could hear was “Joey Mack” over and over again. Def a defining moment for me.

Tell me about BlockGang Music Group. Are you still with them? What’s the deal?
I never officially signed any contracts or anything with BlockGang Music Group. Me and Barz developed a relationship because he noticed how hard i worked and showed me love. BlockGang has done a lot for the city, i know that they have a distro deal thru Universal Records. I respect Barz Alone for the fact that he gave me the chance to be a part of the whole Nati Got Next movement, but signing to his label just did not feel right to me, it was not my time. I feel if i would of signed other opportunities will arise and i’d be stuck. But I’m just affiliated with them. No contracts.

On your free time, what else do you do besides music?
The free time that i have i still always inquire something music wise, whether I’m promoting my new songs, promoting a new show coming up. But when i m just chilling, i spend time with family and friends cause at the end of the day thats all you really have anyway.

If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing?
Honestly, I’ve always been the type to make something happen. So if i didn’t pursue music, i would be looking into something in a business field. Owning/Managing business. But i cant picture myself doing anything else but music.

What is it about your music that makes it different from the rest?
I feel now a days, especially in hip hop, there is a lot of repetition and predictability. i know a lot of people claim there original but I’m truly authentic. I’m persistent when i comes to writing good music. like the mixtape I’m bout to drop, Element Of Surprise hosted by Dj Drowsy, is all diverse, from club songs, to deep story telling to, back pack hip hop. i feel I’m just very diverse.

When is that dropping?
Mid January we are still working on a few things with mastering and gettin the cover made and stuff like that but its def coming very soon.

What other Cincinnati artists would like to work with?
In the future I’d like to do something with Hi Tek. or Showtime. I feel they both are icons in the city.

Do you have any upcoming shows? Or albums/mixtapes dropping soon?
I’m headlining a show in Findlay, Ohio (bout 3 hrs north), at this place called Studio 4, and another show at Miami University. Both in January and then the mixtape, Element Of Surprise hosted by Dj Drowsy is dropping in Jan.

If someone wants to holla at you for a collabo or a show, how can they get a hold of you?

What is your favorite thing to do in Cincinnati?
My fav thing to do is meet new people. Go out to all the clubs and show face so others know i support what there doing just as much as they support me.

Anything you would like to add or shout out?
